Android O updates
Android is getting a new operating system update, with new features available for developers. We have made the following changes to the Passenger app.
Quince release is Android-only.
Widget prompts
We have added in-app widget prompts, allowing you to add widgets for your favourites and tickets easily. The prompt appears when a favourite is added in the app, and as a button when you purchase a ticket.
Notification updates
Notifications have been grouped into channels, giving you better control over which notification types to show for the app.
Adaptive icons
Icon shape can be changed with supported launchers. The variations shown above are supported by the Android Pixel launcher.
General optimisations
We have changed the way background services work for the Android app. The background services (ticket refresh, destination and ticket notifications) are now carried out in a more optimised way. This reduces the number of times the phone is woken up, making the app more efficient for every Android user.
Android OS support change
As part of this update, we have removed support for old Android versions released before 2013. KitKat (4.4), released in 2013, is now the lowest Android OS version supported by Passenger. The users on previous Android versions will be able to keep using the app release they have installed previously, but will not be able to download new releases. The majority of our users – 98% and constantly increasing – are on newer OS versions, so this only affects a small number of users.
You can always check our current mobile support on our mobile support page.
